This story has such a great message and is appealing for kids of all ages. The illustrations will keep the little ones' attention too! I would recommend this to anyone looking to add great books to their collection.
My 4-yr-old boy/girl twins LOVE Conch and his travels, and agreed that his trials and his physical imperfections ("cuts and boo-boo's") are what made him special and "a really cool shell!" I used to teach kindergarten and 1st grade and think this is the perfect book for teachers, parents, grandparents, church leaders, etc. to spark a vital conversation that touches on so many important topics for children, such as self-confidence, self-worth, how to treat others, understanding and appreciating/celebrating others' differences, as well as a GREAT geography lesson! What a special book, hope the author has more coming!!!
We LOVE this book! I have a son (8) and daughter (6) who both repeatedly ask me to read this book with them. Conch is a unique character unlike any other children’s books on our bookshelves. As a parent, I particularly appreciate the use of real, yet slightly rare geographic locations for the setting. It helps open my kids’ eyes to a world beyond our own experiences. I also am happy that the text isn’t “dumbed down” for children. The author chose to use more advanced wording that introduces kids to new vocabulary in a format where they understand the meaning within the context. My boring academic praises aside, The Story of Conch is a real treasure. My kids can relate to Conch in that he has scars, mishaps, moments of rejection, and yet in the end he learns to accept and value himself for who he is. This book is a must-have for children of all ages!
Love this story! We are using it as a community read in our Lower School. The theme of the month is self-acceptance.
The story and illustrations would be appealing to all ages. It has a wonderful moral theme which emphasizes character over appearance.
