Steve has written a succinct yet powerful book here. His style is personal and engaging, his advice practical and "to the heart." The questions that need answering toward the end of certain chapters force the reader to take action toward achieving his goals. By far the best short book I've read this year.
Steve Monte's "Catch Your Big Break" is a concise and complete guide for career and personal development. He provides essential information and informational resources for those who are in-transition and for those seeking to escape from an empty and meaningless life. The book's subtitle "7 Steps to Get the Job You Want and Get Ahead in Your Career" really should be titled "Get the Life You Intrinsically Need and Want for Happiness" since this is the central topic of the book.
Monte is no stranger to the paradox of working hard but not getting what you think it brings. He has made the "sucker's choice" of working 80 hours a week and sacrificing a fulfilling life to "getting ahead." He had an epiphany and came to realize that there was another path, but one that required him to accept the discomfort that comes with gambling on the upside of taking risk. He is now managing the mental health clinic for Santa Clara County (CA) Juvenile Hall and pursuing a career in executive coaching, writing, and public speaking. From the sounds of it, he has found a very fulfilling life.
